A few people have been asking about updates since the end of States back in March. There have been tournaments, interesting developments regarding eighth graders who will be attending some local private schools, and a great deal of controversy over the proposed Region 9.
Unfortunately, I have been too busy to keep up with all of the goings on, as we have been in the process of selling our home in New Jersey and purchasing a new home in Virginia. It seems that Region 2 Guy is now going to be Virginia Guy! That would suggest the end of this blog, as I will no longer be around to watch kids wrestle, hob-nob with the crazy wrestling dads, and in general stay on top of the local activity.
It's been a lot of fun, and I wish the very best to all the brave kids who take part in the toughest sport in the world.
Wow. You will be missed. You did a great job. Good luck in Virginia
ReplyDeleteRegion 2 Guy,
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for writing one of the best blogs I have ever read. Your information was given to the "REGION 2 WRESTLING NATION" with speed and accuracy. You were very kind over the years to both my boys. I`m just sorry I never took the time to personally thank you when a fellow parent pointed you out at a tournament.
All the best to you & your family, from our family,
BIG CAT, PACO, & GABE
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words. I will be visiting the area regularly for work, so likely I'll catch a few dual meets next season. Maybe I'll run into you. Good luck to your guys next year.
DeleteRiver Dell Duals....anyone been at them this week?
ReplyDeleteSome notes:
1. DalCortivo is now wrestling for Hasbrouck Heights and has transferred out of Joes. I know Joe's still has 4 probable state placers (Tropea, DeFilipo, Carafagno and Maniero) but they could be in trouble this year unless they recruit some more guys. I heard maybe Gabe Robles is transferring to Joe's although he is not a state level guy like the four mentioned above but still a wrestler who can win matches at Regions. Even still, you need more than 5 guys to win dual meets.
2. Sebahie vs. Mullen. Mullen probably had around 5-6 pounds on him but Sebahie handled him fairly easily. Score was 7-2 but Mullen had some desperation attempts at the end of the match so it was really like 5-2. Wish they changed the rules for an elite matchup and made the periods longer.
3. Matches are only a 1-1-1 and this type of summer wrestling is not all that intense but other good bouts were: Esposito from Cliffiside Park beating Ben Brisman from Pascack Hills (two state qualifiers). Brisman also beat Kallensee from River Dell which was the Region 3-4 match last year.
4. Probably should have mentioned this when talking about Dalcortivo but Mazzeo's son who is an incoming freshman beat Dalcortivo in OT. Emerson is going to be very good this year...probably the second best public school team behind Paramus. Look for Old Tappan and River Dell to round out the top 4 public schools as well this year.
5. River Dell - Dakota Jones is back for them and looks healthy and ready to roll. They only graduated a few guys from last year so they should be back to top form.
6. Old Tappan - could have 3 state placers between Mullen, Jordan and Downey. Downey looked bigger than Jordan -- wouldn't be surprised to see Jordan wrestle 195 and Downey 220. They could essentially be up 18 points to start off every match with those 3. All you need is 4-5 more wins from the rest of the lineup and they should win a lot of dual meets.
ST. Joe's
ReplyDeleteWith Dalcortivo leaving after being there for three years really tells you were they are going. Not hearing good things about SJR.
Old Tappan
Yes they have the 3 big guys who could all place at States but they are very good top to bottom in there lineup. Murawski was an undersized freshman last year, he put on 10lbs of muscle and has been wrestling everywhere this off season. The middle weights are mostly juniors who will all have winning records.
Emerson
Luke Mazzeo is a stud ! He looked really good this week.
Gabe Robles thought about going to SJR but will stay at Emerson.
A good problem for Emerson is they have Gabe Robles, Paco Robles, Sam Schnieder and Mazzeo going for two spots. One guy will have to cut and the other will have to bump up.
You failed to mention that Old Tappan middle weight Declan Ward has a serious injury and might miss the beginning of the season. Im not exactly sure what that injury is.
DeleteKyle Kiaser is the clear cut favorate at 106 for region 2 with Murawski in the top 2-3.
Murawski is wrestling really tough this off season but he is not in the same class as Kiaser. I see no real outstanding freshman comimg in this year @ 106
Luke Mazzeo beat John Burger this week in addition to Jason Dalcortivo
sounds like you have something against Old Tappan
DeleteAre you from Emerson?
well good luck with your season
Best thing Joes's did was to not let the assistant coach come back after the aledged abuse incidents. That's some scary stuff. Last year I think Joes sent 6 kids to AC with 4 of them getting medals, that's impressive. Not hearing good things about them? I just heard two kids from Bosco might be transferring to joes, and that there is a stud 106 coming in.
DeleteThe possible 106 guy your talking about is not a stud just a good wrestler and only weighs 95lbs
DeleteFrom spring through summer guys change there mind to what Catholic they are going to or even there hometown school. Even the first month of September kids change there mind.
DeleteAsk me Oct 1st where a kid is going to wrestle I will tell you then.
The two guys transfering from DB did not wrestle varsity last year
DeleteThats why the are transfering
Mazzeo 113 / 120, Paco 120 / 126 / 132, Gabe 126 / 132 / 138, Schneider 132 / 138 / 145
DeleteShaw filling in the blanks...Good problem to have
Heard another rumor that Maniero the state place winner from St. Joes left and is now at another school? Anyone else here that?
DeleteYes he did leave
DeleteHeard it from a father of a SJR wrewstler
Its July so everybody calm down about who is wrestling at weight class
ReplyDeleteOnly God knows who will be at what weight in December.
I remember a few years back people were saying that about a couple incoming "only 95lb 106 pounders" and they made it to states every year in HS and have a collection of state medals.
ReplyDeleteyes you are correct but those guys were real studs coming in
ReplyDeleteWith these incoming kids to Joes, seems like they still win district 8, their 95/ 106lb will be a district champ in a weak weight class, and their two DB transfers will make it to regions as well. Sounds like good things to me.
ReplyDeleteYou failed to mention all the open weight classes SJR will have
DeleteStud Jason Dalcortivo went back to HH
DeleteHow did Tropea do at Fargo (113) ?
DeleteNOT GOOD
Looking like he will have to cut to 106 again and beat undersized freshman to get a medal at States
Yeah seems like he had a tough tournament, maybe too big of a cut? How the boys from Old Tappan or Emerson do at Fargo?
DeleteWasn't Tropea's medal match at states against nationally ranked Sophmore from W. Morris? What undersized freshman are you talking about?
Now there is a fine example of some pure upper Bergen county class, here you insulting and trash talking a 17 yr old kid on a Bergen county wrestling forum , who I'm sure has a better HS wrestling career then you or anyone on your sons team, and he's not done yet! Don't you know kids read this stuff? Bet you wouldn't have the balls to say that to his face!
DeleteTropea is a great talent
DeleteAssistant coach Brian Long was the best thing at SJR
DeleteSay that to the 4 kids that left because of him, see what they think.
DeleteThe 95lb St. Joes kid doesn't beat Nick Weber from Closter or Murawski from Old Tappan
ReplyDeleteHe takes 3rd in District 8
i agree on that
DeleteI think Nick Weber has medaled 6x at kids States 1x State champ. He will be an undersized freshman but he is tough as nails.I heard murawski is getting big he could be a State qualifier this year.
I would think Tropea doesnt go 106 again
Mazzeo is going to medal at States this year. You can bet on that!
Noooooo
DeleteWeber placed at States 7x
i saw him lose to murawski twice for wrestle offs for Olympic's dual team
Tropea is walking around 126+ now
Emerson Park Ridge crushes Joes this year. We are loaded with studs.
ReplyDelete2
DeleteWe got two returning and alot of firepower. Loaded from top to bottom, it's gonna be hard to beat us. We should be ranked 1 after Bergen and Don Bosco
DeleteEmerson still will have a lot of holes at the top of their line up. Lower and middle weights are outstanding. Do you think they can battle Paramus and OT for top public school?
DeleteNever, Paramus is at another level with publics. They beat the both of them by 30. Paramus might have both on schedule.
DeleteEasy there...
DeleteMany of your STUDS are incoming freshmen. They are good, but other than Mazzeo, none of them will have 20 wins.
for the publics its:
Delete1 Paramus
2 OT
3 Emerson
it wont be close for Paramus
OT HAS 0% Chance of beating EPR this year...0
Deletei wouldn't say 0% chance since OT WON LAST YEAR.
DeleteThey won due to the fact there were 3 starters out injured (18 points on forfeits)
DeleteEPR vs OT 12/22 @ 7:00 PM
DeleteAny & all doubts answered very early in the season...
is that EPR or OT gym ?
DeleteOT GYM
Deleteare they scheduled to wrestle each other ? How many returning state medalist do you guys have this year?
ReplyDeleteDo one more season prediction for the top 5 at each weight!
ReplyDeleteOnly the top 3 advance
DeleteWhich is why top 5 would make it interesting
DeleteYes that would interesting top 5
DeletePlease Mr. Region 2 guy one last time
List your top 5 per weight the best you can even if you have been out of the loop around here
Mazzeo is a very good wrestler, yes. What weight will he Definitely Medal @ States ? He`s not beating Paco Robles or Schneider, on the same team, he`s not at the same level as either of them. That being said, he will have to wrestle a weight class where those 2 aren`t. It will be a good season if he even makes it down to Atlantic City. KEEP DREAMING !
ReplyDeleteBTW Luke does go toe to toe with Paco in practice. Call it a draw
DeleteMazzeo beat John Burger this summer who is a State medalist
DeleteJust a side note
DeleteLuke Mazzeo's younger brother Logan is coming up next year. He's even had a better kids States record than Luke
I can see Logan Mazzeo, Nick Weber and Matthew Murawski battling it out in District 8 for the next few years
Emerson will be good for years
Hard to argue with friends and parents, it`s too one sided.
DeleteBut...
Luke beat Burger in the summer, 1 minute periods. Burger will beat him easily during the year. Not a close match...
As far as practice goes, who cares, it`s fantasy wrestling. He can`t beat Robles or Schneider either, probably gets majored or pinned by both of them !
Luke is very good, but not on the same level, too young & not strong enough.
Luke did not medal in KIDS STATES this year...
Luke Mazzeo is going to wrestle what ever weight class his father/coach wants him to
ReplyDeleteMore than 1/3 of bergens returning team this year is a state champ, still baffled by the argument that private schools shouldnt have their own region
ReplyDeletepaco robles going 13 this year?
ReplyDelete120 for the season
ReplyDelete113 for districts
will be going 113 for super 32
did not see him in brackets at super 32
Deletewas hurt
